Abstract:  The "best practice" to achieve higher reliability is to build reliability into
products at the earliest stages of the design process. This guidebook
describes design practices that are key to improving reliability of software
or equipment. The process of designing-in reliability consists of six
interrelated steps: 1) know the reliability requirements; 2) use the proper
part properly; 3) use proper design techniques; 4) design to minimize the
effect of external factors; 5) avoid failures through scheduled maintenance;
and 6) conduct design reviews. Each of these steps is described in detail.
