These guidelines for improving software by increasing the maturity of the
processes by which it is developed and maintained include the Software Process
Improvement (SPI) model of maturity and the method for using the model. The
model and method are specifically tailored to the needs of supplier companies
in the semiconductor industry. The guidelines apply to the work of software
engineers, their managers, and the quality engineers in supplier companies who
champion change and improvement. This material is intended to provide a
context for developments that support and expedite software improvement.
In addition, this document discusses the challenge software is posing for the
semiconductor industry and the global effort to provide resources and enact
standards for software improvement.
