Mathematical Expressions
When writing mathematical expressions, use standard, familiar notation.
Consistency
Treat notation consistently throughout the document.
Notation Within Text
When notation is used within text, leave a double space between the text and the following or preceding symbol.
This shows that x=y.
Display long or complicated expressions on a line by themselves.
x/(x + y), x(x + y)-1 , Cn,r , exp(x2 + y2) .
Symbols, Signs, and Operators
Leave space between symbols.
y=0(x)=: cos x dx
When a plus, minus, or plus-or-minus symbol is used to designate the sign of a number, do not insert a space between them.
-12
+5
When a symbol is used as an operator on the number, do insert a space.
An integer > 1 is said to be prime if its only positive divisors are itself and 1.
>/=10
=0
